A Time of High Cotton: A personal history of three interrelated plantations Mulberry Hill, Home of Lt. William Miller Bouknight Pine House, Home of … Home of America’s Tenth President, John Tyler

Product Description
Frances Payne Bouknight Tyler, a southern gentlewoman of the 20th and 21st centuries, documents four centuries of one family's genealogy, with links from the period of William the Conqueror to several U.S. presidents. Beginning with the Civil War, Mrs. Tyler follows the history of three plantations, two in South Carolina and one in Virginia. From her father in South Carolina, Mrs. Tyler learned the skills necessary to run a cotton plantation, which she did beginning in 1945 and continued until 2010. Rarely, if ever, has plantation life been so well-documented through the life of one person. Mrs. Tyler also recounts the restoration of her husband's ancestral home, Sherwood Forest, which belonged to John Tyler, the 10th U.S. president of the United States. Today, Sherwood Forest is a National Historic Landmark, open to the public, only one of two pre-20th century presidential homes still privately owned. A Time of High Cotton offers a delightful glimpse of life as it once was, before the "old order giveth way."
